Borobudur tickets for foreigners

Borobudur has five kinds of ticket and two price tiers, and the one you want depends on the hour you plan to arrive. Here is what each covers, how the official booking works, and what your tour already pays for.

All official Borobudur tickets are sold by InJourney Destination Management, the state company that runs the park (you may still see its old name, TWC). The monument itself is looked after by the government heritage office, which is why the rules on the stones are strict and the climbing tickets come in timed sessions.

We print no prices on this site. Amounts change with promotions, and the official ticket site shows the current figure for your date. What we can tell you is which ticket fits which plan, and the traps that catch foreign visitors.

The quick answer

For most foreign visitors the choice is between the climbing ticket (timed sessions from 08:30, guide and upanat sandals included) and the sunrise ticket (04:00 check-in, top terrace, 100 people a day, a little over twice the climbing price). Book both on ticket.injourneydestination.id. Foreigners pay a higher tier than Indonesian citizens and KITAS holders. If you book a tour, check whether temple entry is included or paid on the day.

What tickets are there at Borobudur?

Five main ones: the climbing ticket, the sunrise ticket, the sunset ticket, grounds-only entry and a Borobudur-Prambanan combo. Setumbu Hill is a separate village fee.

How does the Borobudur sunrise ticket work?

You book a named slot online, check in at 04:00 at Gate 7, and walk up with a guide to the top terrace. It is capped at 100 people a day and costs a little over twice a regular climbing ticket.

The official sunrise page asks you to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and warns that late arrivals may get limited access. A wristband, flashlight, upanat sandals and a guide are part of the ticket, and breakfast at Manohara Restaurant follows. There is also a Sunrise Pradaksina version with a silent walk around the temple and meditation. International visitors pay a higher tier than domestic ones.

Promotions do happen, for Chinese New Year and the school holidays in 2026, and they mostly favour domestic buyers. Read more about the relaunch in our sunrise ticket post, and about the dusk version in the sunset ticket post.

How do the climbing sessions work?

There are eight sessions a day, hourly from 08:30, each with roughly 150 places, and every group climbs with a licensed guide.

You pick a session when you book, show the e-ticket at the gate, swap your shoes for upanat and join a guided group. The route is one way, up from the east stairs through the galleries to the circular terraces, and down the other side. Sessions run about 90 minutes. Online and counter sales share one quota, so the morning slots go first in high season and on weekends.

Climbing has been allowed every day since July 2025. Older pages saying Borobudur is closed to climbers on Mondays are out of date; see our post on daily climbing and the full rules in the climbing rules guide.

Skip the session lottery: a guaranteed climb, Setumbu Hill at dawn and Prambanan in the afternoon, hill ticket included.

How do I book Borobudur tickets online?

On the official site, ticket.injourneydestination.id (also reachable as ticket.borobudurpark.com). The e-ticket arrives by email and is scanned at the gate.

  1. Open the official ticket site and pick the product: Borobudur Temple for the climb, Borobudur Sunrise for dawn.
  2. Choose the date and, for the climb, the session.
  3. Select the international tier unless you hold an Indonesian KTP, KITAS or KITAP.
  4. Enter names as they appear on your passport and pay online.
  5. Keep the emailed e-ticket on your phone, with a screenshot in case signal is weak at the gate.

Traveloka and tiket.com resell the same tickets. Avoid unofficial sites that look like the park's own; if the address is not one of the two above, it is a reseller. The park lists a WhatsApp call centre on its site for questions.

Do foreigners pay more, and what ID do you need?

Yes. Foreign visitors pay a higher tier than Indonesian citizens. Residents with a KITAS or KITAP qualify for the domestic rate with the original card.

Bring your passport, or at least a copy, in the name on the booking. We found no published rule that the gate checks passports on every entry, but tours are clear about it: the VIP sunrise climb asks for a passport copy by WhatsApp to register you on the official site, and the sunrise tour with breakfast tells guests to bring a passport or ID (a copy is accepted).

Children pay a lower climbing tier than adults. Check the age bands on the booking page for your date.

What does a tour include, and what do you pay on the day?

It varies by tour and by option. Some include every ticket, some leave temple entry to be paid in cash on the day, and one has the driver collect the sunrise ticket money.

Entry, the Setumbu fee and the guided climb in one booking, with sunrise on the hill or the temple top.

Is it true it costs a fortune to climb Borobudur?

No. A steep climbing fee for foreigners was floated in 2022 and dropped after a public outcry. The quota and session system replaced it.

In June 2022 the government proposed a large jump in the climbing price, with a much higher figure for foreign tourists, to protect the stones. The plan was cancelled within weeks, as Fortune Indonesia reported. What came instead were the timed sessions, the daily cap per session and the mandatory upanat sandals. Pages still quoting the 2022 figure as current are simply old.

The two price facts worth knowing today: foreign visitors pay more than domestic ones, and the sunrise ticket costs a little over twice the regular climb.

Do you need a ticket for Setumbu Hill?

Yes, a small fee paid at the village gate. Most sunrise tours that go there include it.

Punthuk Setumbu is run by Karangrejo village, not by InJourney, so it is not on the official ticket site. You pay at the entrance at the bottom of the path, which opens at 04:00. The Setumbu Hill sunrise, the guaranteed-climb Prambanan day and the hill options of the hill-or-temple tour all list the hill ticket as included. Bukit Rhema and Barede next door charge their own small fees.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy Borobudur tickets at the gate?

Yes, there are counters on site, but they share one quota with online sales. Morning climbing sessions and the 100 sunrise places can sell out, so book ahead in high season.

Does the climbing ticket include the museum and grounds?

It includes the temple grounds. The official page is the place to check which park venues your ticket covers on the day.

Is there a Borobudur and Prambanan combo ticket for foreigners?

A combo exists for domestic visitors. We could not confirm a current foreign combo; check the official site, or book a tour that bundles both.

Can I cancel an official Borobudur ticket?

Check the terms on the official booking page before paying. Tours booked on GetYourGuide on this site offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
