Booking choice: The sunrise, climb and Prambanan tour, 5 to 11 hours. Book this Tour details
Borobudur and Prambanan are the two great temple sites of Central Java, both UNESCO World Heritage since 1991, and both a drive from Yogyakarta in opposite directions: Borobudur about 40 km to the north-west, Prambanan about 17 km to the north-east. Doing both in one day is easy to organise and tiring to do.
Most combined tours start with a Borobudur sunrise and reach Prambanan in the afternoon. Three of the tours on this site make that their whole plan, and one adds a jeep on the slopes of Merapi.
The quick answer
Yes, you can do both in a day: about 10 to 12 hours from a 03:00 to 04:00 pickup. Do Borobudur first, at sunrise, and Prambanan in the afternoon, when its towers catch the low light. Budget about 1.5 to 2 hours on the road between them. Check the listing for Monday rules at Prambanan, and pick a tour with both temple tickets included if you want a cash-free day.

Which is better, Borobudur or Prambanan?
Neither: they are different. Borobudur is a single Buddhist monument you climb, a stone mandala of terraces and stupas. Prambanan is a Hindu compound of tall, pointed towers you walk among.
Borobudur is older, built in the late 8th and early 9th centuries by the Sailendra dynasty, and is the largest Buddhist temple in the world. UNESCO describes Prambanan as a 10th-century compound and the largest dedicated to Shiva in Indonesia, with shrines to Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma and reliefs of the Ramayana. If you have time for only one, choose Borobudur for the sunrise and the setting, Prambanan for the drama of the towers and an easier walk.
For the background on Borobudur itself, see our facts and history guide.

Which should you visit first?
Borobudur first, at sunrise, then Prambanan in the afternoon. A few tours reverse the order, so check yours.
The sunrise decides it: you can only get the dawn at Borobudur by going there first. Prambanan's towers also look their best late in the day. The climb and Prambanan day and the guaranteed-climb Prambanan day both say the temple order can vary, so read the itinerary for your date.
Setumbu at dawn, a guaranteed climb, Prambanan in the afternoon: the classic day, hill ticket included.
Book thisHow long is the drive between Borobudur and Prambanan?
About 1.5 to 2 hours by road, usually passing Yogyakarta. Tours budget 75 to 90 minutes.
The two sites are about 40 km apart in a straight line, but the road loops round through or past the city. The climb-assured Prambanan tour allows about 1.5 hours by van; the climb and Prambanan day about 75 minutes. Add a lunch stop and the day runs 10 to 12 hours. Public transport between the two is slow and not practical on the same day as a sunrise.
What does a Borobudur and Prambanan day look like?
Pickup around 03:00 to 04:00, sunrise and the Borobudur climb by late morning, lunch, Prambanan in the afternoon, back in Yogyakarta around 17:00 to 18:00.
- 03:00 to 04:00: pickup in Yogyakarta, about an hour's drive.
- 05:00 to 06:30: sunrise on Setumbu Hill, or on the temple top with the official ticket.
- 08:30: the first climbing session (skip if you watched from the top).
- Late morning: a break, breakfast or lunch near Magelang.
- Afternoon: about two hours at Prambanan with a guide.
- Evening: back at your hotel.
The climb-assured Prambanan tour runs this as a 10-hour option with the temple sunrise or an 11-hour one with Setumbu.

Four set plans, two of them with Prambanan: a temple-top sunrise and Prambanan in 10 hours, or Setumbu, the climb and Prambanan in 11. Temple fees are paid on the day.
Book this Tour detailsIs Prambanan closed on Mondays?
Partly, according to the tour listings: the main Roro Jonggrang temple is closed on Mondays, and operators say Prambanan is grounds-only that day. Borobudur climbing runs daily.
We are reporting what the listings say, not an official notice. The guaranteed-climb Prambanan day states that the Roro Jonggrang temple is closed on Mondays. If Monday is your only day, check with the operator what you will see at Prambanan, or swap in Mendut and Pawon. Borobudur has been open for climbing every day since July 2025.
Can you add Mount Merapi to the same day?
Yes, if you can handle a 12-hour day: one tour adds a jeep ride on Merapi's lava fields between Borobudur and Prambanan.
The Merapi jeep day starts with sunrise at Setumbu (or the temple by option), visits Borobudur, then a jeep runs you over the slopes of Merapi before lunch and Prambanan. Borobudur and Prambanan entry fees are paid in cash on the day. Jeep tours stay outside the hazard zones and can be suspended when the volcano is active; Merapi has been on alert level III since 2020, and the summit is closed to climbers.

Sunrise, a jeep on Merapi and Prambanan before evening, lunch included: three sights, one long day.
Book thisAre Mendut and Pawon worth adding?
Yes, if you have an hour. They are small temples on a straight line east of Borobudur, part of the same UNESCO site, and almost empty.
Pawon is about 1.75 km from Borobudur and Mendut about 1.15 km further on, all three on one east-west axis. Mendut holds a large stone Buddha flanked by two Bodhisattvas, per UNESCO. The Vesak procession walks from Mendut to Pawon to Borobudur every year. The Setumbu Hill sunrise offers Mendut or Pawon as an option, which makes a calmer alternative to Prambanan if you would rather not spend the afternoon in a van.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do Borobudur and Prambanan without a tour?
Yes, with a hired car and driver. Public transport does not run early enough for a sunrise, and the buses between the two sites are slow.
Is one day enough for Borobudur and Prambanan?
Enough to see both properly, yes. It is a long day. With two days, do a sunrise at Borobudur and a relaxed afternoon at Prambanan on the second.
Is there a combined ticket?
A combined ticket exists for domestic visitors. For foreigners, the simplest way to cover both is a tour with both tickets on the all-inclusive option.
Which tour includes both temple tickets?
The guaranteed-climb Prambanan day and the climb and Prambanan day include them on their all-inclusive options. Others collect entry on the day.
