Check whether the official sunrise ticket is in your option
You choose at booking: sunrise on Setumbu Hill, or on the top terrace of the temple itself. Either way a local guide walks you up Borobudur afterwards.
What's included
Sunrise on Setumbu Hill, or inside the temple with that option
Four set itineraries, from a 5-hour temple sunrise to an 11-hour day with Setumbu Hill, the climb and Prambanan. Temple entry fees are paid on the day.
Two questions sort it out. Do you want to stand on the temple at dawn, or look at it from a hill across the
valley? And do you want the afternoon free, or Prambanan and Merapi as well?
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before on every tour here. Climbing the temple always means a
timed session, a licensed local guide and woven upanat sandals; on the official sunrise ticket all three are included.
Before you book
Two sunrises, one name.
"Borobudur sunrise" covers two different mornings. The classic one is on Punthuk Setumbu, a village hill in
the Menoreh range about 2 km west of the temple. You climb steps through the trees in the dark, stand on a wooden
platform, and watch Borobudur appear small and grey in a valley of mist, with Merapi and Merbabu on the horizon.
Most tours sold as a sunrise tour do exactly this, then take you to the temple for the first regular climbing session at 08:30.
The other is on the temple itself. The park operator, InJourney, stopped dawn visits in 2020 and brought them
back in October 2025 as an official ticket: check-in at 04:00 at Gate 7, the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center, a
guide, a flashlight and upanat, then first light from the top terrace among the bell stupas. You see the volcanoes
over the stone, not the temple in the mist. It was launched as a trial, so the details can change.
100
Places a day on the official temple sunrise. The daytime climb takes
about 150 people per hourly session from 08:30, so the dawn group is small by comparison.
Setumbu HillTemple topClimb from 08:30Prambanan add-on
The view from Setumbu: the temple small and far away, the volcanoes behind it.
01
Where will I stand?
On Setumbu Hill, unless the tour says inside the temple, on the summit or on the top terrace. If it says nothing, ask.
02
When is sunrise?
About 05:10 to 05:55 local time, earliest in November and latest in July.
03
What do I bring?
Your passport or a copy, clothes over shoulders and knees, a light jacket and a head torch.
04
Who should skip it?
Anyone who struggles with steep stone steps in the dark. The 08:30 climb is the gentler option.
Your morning
How a sunrise tour runs
Five to eight hours door to door from Yogyakarta, longer with Prambanan or Merapi. This is the shape of it.

The climb and breakfast
Temple groups walk the terraces with the guide and eat at Manohara. Hill groups wait for the 08:30 climbing session.
Sunrise times, the tickets, the climbing rules and what to wear: one tab each.
November and December: the earliest sunrises, around 05:10 to 05:15, so the sky is already light before 05:00.
January to May: around 05:25 to 05:45.
June to August: the latest, up to about 05:53 in mid-July, which gives a 04:00 start the most slack.
September and October: creeping earlier again, from about 05:40 to 05:20.
The sun clears the volcano skyline a few minutes after the official sunrise time.
Official sunrise ticket: 04:00 at Gate 7, guide, upanat, flashlight and breakfast included, 100 places a day.
Climbing ticket: one of eight hourly sessions from 08:30, with a licensed guide and upanat.
Grounds ticket: the park and museums without the climb; online it is sold to Indonesian visitors.
Setumbu Hill: a small village entry fee, paid at the gate and included on most hill tours.
Foreign visitors pay a separate, higher tier. The ticket guide explains what each tour covers.
Climbing is allowed every day of the week since July 2025, in guided groups only.
Upanat sandals are compulsory on the stones; your own shoes stay below.
No hands inside the stupas: the old wish-making custom of touching the Buddha is banned to protect the stone.
No drones, no food on the monument, and no sitting or climbing on stupas and walls.
Cover shoulders and knees: light trousers or a long skirt and a T-shirt are ideal.
Bring a thin jacket for 04:00. It is cool on the hill and warms up fast after sunrise.
A head torch helps on the Setumbu steps; the temple sunrise hands out flashlights.
Carry your passport or a copy: the booking is made in your name. Full list in the rules guide.

Where it happens
Where the sunrise happens
A temple in a valley ringed by hills
Temple sunrise: Gate 7, Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center, Borobudur, Magelang
Borobudur stands on a low hill in the Kedu valley, about 40 km north-west of Yogyakarta. The Menoreh hills rise to the
south and west, and that is where the sunrise viewpoints are: Setumbu, the Chicken Church on Bukit Rhema a short walk
away, and the quieter Bukit Barede. Merapi and Merbabu stand to the east, which is why the sun comes up behind them.
Setumbu Hill: about 2 km from the temple, 15 minutes by car
Mendut temple: about 3 km east, on the same line as Pawon
Sunrise is the start, not the day. After the hill and the temple, a jeep takes you onto the lava fields on the slopes of Mount Merapi, then on to Prambanan for the afternoon. Lunch is included; the temple entry fees are paid in cash on the day. Book it if you have one day in Yogyakarta and want all three.

The guide
Borobudur at dawn, explained
Borobudur is not a building you walk into. It is a hill of stone you walk around and up, and the sunrise
tours make more sense once you know what you are climbing.
The temple you climb
The Sailendra kings built it in the late 8th and early 9th centuries, roughly 1,200 years ago, out of grey volcanic
andesite. There is no room inside. Instead there are nine stacked platforms: six square ones lined with
carved galleries, then three round terraces carrying 72 latticed stupas around one big central stupa. Walking up is the
point. Pilgrims went clockwise round each level, reading 2,672 relief panels on the way, from the life of the Buddha
and his earlier lives on the lower galleries to the search for wisdom higher up, and came out at the top into open sky.
Most of the 504 Buddha statues sit in niches on the square levels. Seventy-two more sit inside the bell stupas, which
is why people peer through the diamond-shaped holes. UNESCO listed the temple, with Mendut and Pawon, in 1991, and
Guinness World Records lists it as the largest Buddhist temple anywhere.
From above, the plan is a mandala: square terraces below, circles of stupas on top.
Hill or temple top
The hill gives you the picture: the whole temple, small and dark, in a valley of mist, with Merapi smoking behind
it. You share the platform with a crowd, and you see Borobudur rather than stand on it. The temple top gives you the
stone: bell stupas turning pink and gold around you, the volcanoes across the valley, and a guide explaining what you
are looking at, with only 99 other people allowed up. You do not get the misty postcard, because you are standing in it.
The honest small print: a listing called "sunrise climb" does not tell you where you watch the
sunrise. Several watch from Setumbu and climb the temple in the 08:30 session; one listing here does not
say at all. Look for the words inside the temple, summit or top terrace, and check whether the
official sunrise ticket is in the price or collected on the day.
The rules on the stones
Since 2023 the climb runs in timed sessions with a licensed local guide, and everyone wears upanat, flat sandals
woven by local craftspeople that spare the stone from shoe soles. You follow a one-way route up the east stairs, through
the galleries and onto the round terraces, then down the other side. Hands stay out of the stupas: reaching in to touch
the Buddha for luck was a popular custom, and it is now banned to protect the stone.
The stairs are steep and narrow, and you climb them in upanat.
Timing it
Come in the dry season if you can, roughly April to October, when mornings are clearest and the sun rises latest. The
mist is never guaranteed: it forms in the river valleys on calm, clear nights and burns off soon after sunrise. Book
the temple sunrise as early as you can in July and August, and keep a spare morning in your plans in case the first
dawn is grey.
The famous ship relief: one of 2,672 panels you pass on the way up.
Straight answers to what people ask most about a Borobudur sunrise.
Can you still watch the sunrise from Borobudur temple itself?
Yes, again. After a pause from 2020, the park operator InJourney relaunched an official sunrise ticket in October 2025: check-in at 04:00 at Gate 7, the Manohara Borobudur Cultural Center, then first light from the top terrace with a guide. It is capped at 100 people a day and was launched as a trial, so book early. The difference from the hill is in temple top or Setumbu Hill.
How much does a sunrise ticket to Borobudur cost?
The official sunrise ticket costs about twice a regular climbing ticket, and foreign visitors pay a higher tier than Indonesian ID holders. A Setumbu Hill sunrise is a small village entry fee. Many tours quote the transport and guide only and collect the temple ticket on the day, so read the inclusions. The ticket guide sorts out which ticket is which.
What time does the sun rise at Borobudur?
Between about 05:10 and 05:55 local time (WIB), depending on the month: earliest in November, latest in July. The sun clears the volcanoes on the horizon a few minutes later. Sunrise tours collect you in Yogyakarta between 03:00 and 04:00. The month-by-month table is in the best time guide.
What is the best time to visit Borobudur Temple?
In the dry season, roughly April to October, and early: at sunrise, or in the 08:30 climbing session before the heat and the school groups build up. June to September is the driest stretch and also the busiest. Weekends and Indonesian school holidays fill the climbing slots first.
Do I need to buy Borobudur tickets in advance?
For the sunrise and for climbing the temple, yes. The sunrise has 100 places a day and the climb runs in eight hourly sessions of about 150 people each, from 08:30. Tickets sell out on weekends and holidays. Book on the official InJourney ticket site, or take a tour that books the climb for you.
Can I wear shorts to Borobudur?
Better not. Indonesia's tourism ministry asks visitors to cover shoulders and knees at the temple, and a sarong may be handed out or requested, so light trousers or a long skirt save the fuss. On the monument itself your shoes come off and you walk in upanat, woven sandals included with the climbing ticket. More in the rules guide.
How much time do you need at Borobudur?
Plan two to three hours at the temple: about 90 minutes for the guided climb, plus the museums and the walk back. A sunrise tour with the climb takes five to eight hours door to door from Yogyakarta, or a full day with Prambanan.
Which is better, Borobudur or Prambanan?
They are different things, and an hour and a half apart. Borobudur is a single Buddhist mountain of stone you climb for its reliefs and stupas; Prambanan is a cluster of tall Hindu towers you walk around. Most visitors do both in a day. See Borobudur and Prambanan in one day.
Is Borobudur one of the 7 wonders of the world?
No. Borobudur is not one of the New 7 Wonders chosen in 2007 and was not a finalist; Indonesia's entry in a later list was Komodo, in the nature category. Borobudur is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, and Guinness World Records lists it as the largest Buddhist temple. More in the facts guide.
How do you pronounce Borobudur?
Bo-ro-BOO-dur, four syllables, with the stress on the third. Locals often run it together quickly.
Can I cancel a Borobudur sunrise tour?
Every tour on this site cancels for a full refund up to 24 hours before the start. Cloud is not a reason for a refund: sunrise tours run rain or shine, and a clear dawn is never guaranteed.
